By showcasing works that shed light on social inequality, discrimination, and injustices, we aim to inspire conversations, empathy, and understanding. ART AND DEMOCRACY IN AMERICAN HISTORY

On September 19th, artist-filled public programming kicked off the opening of the traveling exhibition “A More Perfect Union: American Artists and the Currents of Our Time.” Kal Penn, Deborah Kass, Hank Willis Thomas, Sanford Biggers, Alfre Woodard, Alexis Rockman, and more participated in a variety of talks and panels. This day was made possible in partnership with Art in Embassies, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History and the University of Virginia’s Karsh Institute of Democracy to present exhibition tours by artists, conversations about the relationship between art and democracy in America, and demonstrations and activities to engage museum visitors.

The history—and future—of art does not exist without LGBTQ+ voices, and we are honored to share podcast episodes, videos, interviews, audio, and more that amplify them. Discover more in the features below encompassing themes of belonging, visibility, and activism. Join us for a free, evening MoMA Pride Celebration that takes over the entire Museum, and come together with other families for a special day of art making and readings focusing on LGBTQ+ history. Sydney was chosen as the host city for WorldPride 2024 after winning the bid during the InterPride Annual General Meeting in Athens in October 2019. This is the first time the event will be held in the Southern Hemisphere, making it a significant milestone for LGBTQ+ communities in the region.

The 2nd of May 1808 in Madrid or
“The Fight against the Mamelukes”

In 1814, Goya addressed the reagent, Cardinal Luis de Bourbon, offering to make works commemorating events from the War of Independence (1808-1812:) "to perpetuate, with a paintbrush, the most notable and heroic actions or scenes of our glorious uprising against the tyrant of Europe". The present work depicts the popular riot of 2 May, 1808, when the people of Madrid attacked the Mamelukes —Turkish soliders in Napolean´s French Army— who were taking the younger children of Carlos IV and Maria Luisa to France. This was the beginning of the War for Independence. Along with The Third of May 1808 in Madrid: the executions on Príncipe Pío Hill (P00749), this work may have decorated a triumphal arch that adorned the streets of Madrid during the entry of Fernando VII. It may also have been used during the celebration commemorating the second of May. The left side still bears the marks of the damage this canvas suffered in 1937 when the Museum´s collection was being transferred to the League of Nations in Geneva during the Civil War.
